You may have seen some posters around the college regarding the SCD Green Awareness Day scheduled for Wednesday 16th of March.

Ciaran Cuffe (Green Party TD for Dún Laoghaire) will be at the college from 11am on the day to launch the event and there will be snacks available. Anyone who wears green on the day will be eligible to win one of our many fantastic prizes

The 2008/2009 SCD Graduation ceremony took place in O'Reilly Hall UCD on Friday 27 November 2009. The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Barry Andrews TD was the guest of honour at the event.

This celebratory occasion acknowledges individual and group achievements, pays tribute to the excellent work of the College and its staff and honours the recipients of awards.

Breaking News - SCDs 'Labyrinth' Garden wins a Silver Gilt Award at Bloom '09. Congratulations to the team!!

Students from SCD have been actively involved with Bloom since its inception. Bloom is Ireland’s largest and most spectacular garden event. It is held every June bank holiday weekend in the Phoenix Park. This year the students have come up with an imaginative solution to beat the recession and with the nation on the hunt for innovating ideas, the students’ concept has already attracted hugh media attention.

The primary element of the students’ concept is a mown grass Labyrinth, which will be enclosed within a mown pattern inspired by the seasonal calendar and the effects of time on plant growth. The concept has two primary objectives. The first is to deliver an engaging garden space for practically no cost and the second is to provide visitors to Bloom with an opportunity for rest and reflection.

Labyrinths can be found is almost every faith and culture across the world. The creation is a simple interpretation of an old idea that allows individuals to consider their place in the world and the surrounding spaces will provide intimate areas for family picnics. The team feels that this image depicts the Ireland of 2009.

The students have kept costs to a minimum and have been forced to use their imaginations in ways not usually tested in garden creation. The main costs include a can of spray-marking paint, the petrol for the lawnmower and packed lunches. When the group ran out of spray paint, creativity set in and they utilised grass clippings to continue setting out the pattern and gathered sticks from the surrounding parkland to protect it from damage.

Bloom will place in Dublin’s Phoenix Park over the June bank holiday weekend from Thursday 28th of May to Monday June 1st. For weekly updates on the project check our Senior College Web site.
